Pride month started on the 1st of June; it is a month to show an expression of love for those that are in the LGBTQ community.

In Liverpool, the LGBTQ community is supported during this month, with parades and events that occur in places such as in the pride district on Stanley Street.

All people are included in this special month, including Drag Queens that shine in this celebration.

Shay Taylor a drag queen for an agency in Liverpool said: “being a drag queen during Pride month is everything! It’s like being in the spotlight and feeling the love and support from the queer community just magnified. The atmosphere at pride events is electrifying”.

They also spoke about the opportunities it has given them, such as performing at venues and small clubs, to Pride events in Belfast and in the future, Liverpool Pride.

Shay said: “The drag community is like a big family. We support and uplift each other, share tips and tricks, and create a sense of belonging. The environment is always filled with love, acceptance, and fierce creativity, and that’s what makes it so enjoyable”.

Being a Drag Queen can be scary however, as there’s not always peace with people outside the community and is vital that, during this month especially, they are treated with respect and love for doing something they love.

It can be a scary social climate especially due to the drag bans in America and recent attacks happening both across the Atlantic and in the UK, which is why it is so important to raise awareness.

Shay said: “So as amazing as pride events are, the rest of the month can be scary but the sense of community and protecting each other is so important for queer people and allies.”

Liverpool offers events where Drag Queen’s shine such as clubs like 'OMG’, ‘Heaven’ and ‘The Navy Bar Social’.

Shay said: “Drag has changed my life in ways I never thought possible. It’s given me the confidence to truly be myself, to step out of my comfort zone, and to embrace my creativity. Through drag, I’ve discovered my own strength and resilience. It’s not just about the makeup and the performances; it’s about self-expression and empowerment. Drag has helped me find my voice, my family, and a whole new level of self-acceptance. It’s been transformative, and I couldn’t be more grateful for it”.

During this special month of pride, we can celebrate their successes’ and help all LGBTQ+ members feel validated in this society, especially in a place like Liverpool where the queer community's acceptance is so pure and full of love and compassion for everyone.
